Alliance Board Member (ABM) – Call for Applications

The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) is seeking an exceptional global leader to join its Board as an Alliance Board Member (ABM). This is a high-impact strategic governance role, offering a unique opportunity to help shape the future of maternal and newborn health worldwide.

As an ABM, you will contribute to advancing ICM’s global mission by strengthening partnerships, expanding influence, and supporting long-term sustainability.

About the Role

The Alliance Board Member plays a critical leadership role in strengthening ICM’s global positioning, partnerships, and financial sustainability. As a member of the Board, the ABM contributes to strategic oversight, supports resource mobilisation, and leverages high-level networks across philanthropy, government, and the private sector.

This role is designed for a senior leader with extensive international experience, strong diplomatic skills, and a track record of engaging at the highest levels of global health, development, and funding ecosystems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic oversight to ensure ICM’s long-term sustainability, with a focus on enhancing financial sustainability, guiding resource mobilisation strategies, and supporting long-term funding partnerships

  • Act as a high-level connector, opening networks and fostering partnerships across sectors

  • Support positioning of ICM within the global donor and philanthropic landscape

  • Advise on external engagement strategies and high-level representation

  • Contribute to the development and monitoring of ICM’s resource mobilisation strategy

  • Participate fully in Board governance, decision-making, and performance evaluation

  • Serve as a global advocate for midwifery, SRHR, and maternal and newborn health

Candidate Profile

ICM is seeking an outstanding individual who brings:

  • Senior-level experience in partnership development, donor engagement, or global health leadership

  • An extensive and active international network across relevant sectors

  • Strong strategic, analytical, and governance experience

  • Demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI)

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and diplomatic skills

  • Experience working with or advising boards and senior leadership

A background in midwifery is not required for this role.

Commitment and Terms

  • Term length: Up to 3 years (2026–2029), with the possibility of renewal for a second term

  • Time commitment: Approximately 15 days per year; Board meetings are held online every two months

  • Compensation: Voluntary role, with reimbursement of reasonable expenses and an annual honorarium in line with ICM governance policies

  • Location: Remote, with occasional travel, including:

  • One annual in-person Board meeting in The Hague (3 days)

  • Attendance at the Triennial Congress every three years (next: Lisbon, June 2026). (All travel expenses covered in line with ICM policy).

Recruitment Process

Appointment through an independent process led by the Independent Election Committee, with final ratification by the ICM Council in June 2026.  Background and reference checks will be conducted for the selected candidate.

Why Apply?

This is a rare opportunity to contribute at the highest level to a global organisation working to improve maternal and newborn health worldwide. The role offers the chance to shape strategy, influence global partnerships, and drive meaningful impact toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
