Humane Officer

Remote Full-time Hiring now

You will investigate violations of California laws related to the treatment of animals as a Level 2 Humane Officer. You will respond to calls from citizens and fellow law enforcement agencies relating to agricultural animal abuse and neglect, and educate the public on animal care. You’ll prepare and maintain reports, cases, and complaints, and appear in court. You will work with animal owners to improve their treatment of poultry and other animals. And you will advise LIC’s attorneys on animal care and law enforcement issues. You will fulfill all legal requirements for a humane officer, including continuing education. Since this is such a small organization, you’ll wear many hats. You may patrol a certain area looking for abused or neglected domestic animals. You may do factual research online or by watching video footage. You may receive and investigate a complaint from the public regarding animal cruelty. You may collect evidence, photograph a crime scene, and appear in court as a witness. Or you may give a public talk or write a blog post on the humane treatment of animals in agriculture. We can only promise it won’t be dull!

Qualifications

  • Law enforcement experience (humane officer or animal control experience preferred).
  • Passion for helping farmed animals.
  • Maturity and good judgment.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Valid California Driver’s License.
  • Effective oral and written communication in English at a minimum (additional languages are a plus).
  • Knowledge of investigative procedures; laws of arrest, search, and seizure; and citizens’ Constitutional rights.
  • Knowledge of California’s animal cruelty laws.
  • Knowledge of basic farmed animal care, and safe and humane animal handling.
  • Ability to occasionally lift, push, and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Physical ability to work with and restrain farmed animals.
  • Willing and able to complete all training courses mandated by state law and LIC (including courses described in Corporation Code section 14502 and Penal Code section 832; preference for applicants who have already completed the Humane Law Enforcement Academy or similar training).
  • Ability to obtain all necessary licenses and pass LIC fingerprint and background investigation.
  • Satisfactorily complete a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) background check.
  • Agricultural experience is a plus.
  • Display kindness to fellow humans, and be comfortable working with members of the public who may be hostile.

About the Role

  • Commitment: Part time, approximately 10 hours per week.
  • Location and travel: Remote, California-based position. Must be available to travel for work as needed throughout California.
  • Reports to: Drew Givens, LIC’s Managing Attorney.
  • Pay: $25–$35 per hour, depending on experience.
