About the position The Research Nurse for Thoracic Head & Neck Medical Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a crucial role in managing research protocols and providing high-quality nursing care to patients enrolled in clinical trials. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of both clinical and research practices, ensuring that all activities comply with institutional policies, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and federal regulations. The Research Nurse will be responsible for protocol management, which includes applying clinical knowledge to effectively oversee research protocols, participating in fiscal activities related to clinical research, and maintaining clear communication with the research team. Documentation and organization of protocol-related items are essential, adhering to guidelines and standards set forth by the institution and regulatory bodies. In addition to protocol management, the Research Nurse will engage in data management, demonstrating a thorough understanding of the research process, including the Code of Federal Regulations and ICH Guidelines for Good Clinical Practice. The nurse will be responsible for data collection and entry, ensuring the quality of protocol-specific data and compliance with institutional reporting requirements. Clinical practice is a significant aspect of this role, where the nurse will apply the nursing process and national standards to deliver care to patients, documenting patient care and outcomes according to institutional and federal standards. Education and team orientation are also key functions of this position. The Research Nurse will identify patient and family learning needs and participate in educational activities to enhance knowledge. Effective communication skills are vital, as the nurse will interact with patients and accept constructive feedback to improve professional practice. Other duties may be assigned as necessary to support the research and clinical objectives of the department. Responsibilities • Applies clinical and research knowledge of protocol conduct in the effective management of research protocols. , • Participates in fiscal activities related to clinical research. , • Communicates effectively with the research team. , • Documents and organizes protocol-related items consistent with protocol guidelines, institutional and departmental policies, GCP, and Federal Regulations. , • Demonstrates knowledge of research process, Code of Federal Regulations, and ICH Guidelines for Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP). , • Demonstrates competence in key aspects of data collection and data entry incorporating institutional guidelines. , • Ensures the quality of protocol-specific data and adheres to institutional reporting requirements. , • Applies the nursing process and incorporates national and institutional standards of nursing practice in delivering nursing care to patients enrolled in research protocols. , • Documents patient care and outcomes per institutional, federal, and protocol standards. , • Applies principles of teaching/learning process to patient/family learning needs and participates in educational activities. , • Uses appropriate communication skills with patients and incorporates constructive feedback into professional practice. Requirements • Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing. , • One year of registered nursing experience. , • Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN). , • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. Nice-to-haves • Prior Research Nurse experience. , • Prior clinical experience in an Oncology setting. , • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
